The Porter Cup is one of the oldest continuous rugby `tournaments in the United States, founded in 1963 by the legendary Robert Fulton "Steamboat" Porter,original scrumhalf for Richmond Rugby Football Club.

I will be pleased to welcome all of you to the 43rd Annual Porter Cup Rugby Tournament this coming weekend at Dorey Park in Richmond.

Youth Rugby Clinic and mini match Saturday at noon:

Pat Walsh from the PRU will be down to run a youth touch rugby clinic and mini match. Open to ages 8 to 13, we encourage you to bring your kids and jion the kids form The Richmond Lions and the Vriginia Gentlemen as we try to spark the fire of youth rugby in Virginia.

MATT GODEK RUGBY SUPPLY will be onsite with his mobile store, at least for Saturday. If you need boots, socks or other gear, now is the time to place the order and have it delevered for free to the event. Pick it up that morning.

VCU vs UR Spring Test Match Sunday at Noon. Join us for the first annual Spring Rugby Test Match between VCU and UR. Having won the DIII Championship in the fall, VCU recently opted to join UR in the VRU Collegiate Mens Division II, and UR is just off its first run at the MARFU Championships. This should be an exciting collegaite matchup as both schools prepare bid farewell to their seniors and break for the summer.

If you need a hotel recomendation, we suggest that you call the Airport Wyndham. The Wyndham Hotel (info. Below) would love to house the Porter Cup attendees on the weekend of 4/7-8, and I will graciously honor the $69 rate per room / per night -(normal weekend rates typically are $99+.)

The schedule: As usual, we have had a team ( Wilmington) drop out at the last minute. I have been and will continue to try and find a replacement team.

If I am not successful, I will ask each of the 7 clubs to provide 3 B side players (some more some less). These players will form a motely side to fill the 8th slot. The team they play in the first and second round will advance automatically. The Motelys sides opponent will keep access to their players when playing the Motley side.

Porter Cup is only a week away and we're looking forward to another great PC weekend! Seedings and game times for Saturday are outlined below. Note that the first games will kick off at 11:00, not 10:00 as mentioned in the previous email. Captains meeting will be held at 10:30 Sat. prior to kickoff at the check-in tent. If you aren't here for the meeting please check in when you arrive. All teams will be required to submit a CIPP roster when checking in. As you know, these can be printed from the website.

If you still need lodging contact the Quality Inn downtown at (804) 788-1600. Rates are $79/double per night. The Sat. night tournament party will be held at Catch 22 in Shockoe Bottom beginning at 5:00pm. Catch is located at 1718 E. Main Street ( Directions from the pitch and hotel will be available at the tournament. Reminder that the Porter Cup final on Sunday will be broadcast live on ESPN radio (950AM). Godek Rugby & Soccer Supply willl be on hand Sat. to supply all your rugby needs.

On a final note, there will be softball and youth soccer going at Dorey Park on Saturday along with the tournament so let's show them what a great sport Rugby can be. Please no alcohol consumption and if you see any beer cans please carry off DO NOT leave in park trash cans;we will get busted: use the port-o-johns and bathrooms instead of the parking lot and field!
