A Madison man died after a two-vehicle accident last week in Madison County.
Lance W. Van de Castle, 54, was driving a 2000 Isuzu Trooper SUV eastbound on Ruth Road, three miles just west of the town of Madison, Sgt. Les Tyler of the Virginia State Police reported.
Cecil Gibson, a 55-year-old Stanardsville resident, was driving a 2006 freightliner tractor-trailer westbound. The two collided head-on in a curve and Van de Castle was on the wrong side of the road Tyler said. Van de Castle had crossed the centerline and struck Gibson, Tyler said.
Van de Castle was pronounced dead at the scene following the 9:35 a.m. March 22 crash. Gibson was transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville with minor injuries and has since been released, Tyler said.
Van de Castle was assistant zoning administrator for the town of Madison.
Trooper Vickie Velazquez is investigating. Tyler said both men were wearing their seat belts. The accident occurred on a rural road in the Ruth community, but Tyler said traffic was detoured with the help of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, volunteer fire company and rescue squad
